Historic environment

In the area known as “La Mezquita”, in the municipality of Busquístar (Granada), an ancient rock settlement identified as Mozarabic and dated between the 8th and 14th centuries is preserved. However, in the study carried out by M. Riu, it is indicated that only because of the documented ceramics, common to Christians, Jews and Muslims, it is not possible to categorically assure that this settlement was Christian.

It is an enclave that had gone unnoticed until P. Madoz, at the end of the 19th century, reported its existence. Later studies carried out by J. C. Spahni and Miguel J. Carrascosa once again mention this enclave. However, it would not be until 1975 when M. Riu Riu made a detailed study of this settlement.

Description

In the study carried out by M. Riu, at least six partially excavated rock enclosures were identified, as well as a staircase, a bathtub-type children’s grave, a well, mechinales for supporting the beams of the upper floors, as well as different excavated cavities. in the rock and a structure made of masonry joined with lime and which has been identified as a possible pool fed by a canal, of which around eight meters in length are preserved. However, as has been mentioned, the scarce material record documented during the prospecting work carried out is quite scarce, consisting mainly of ceramics datable between the 8th and 14th centuries.

The site suffered significant damage at the beginning of the 20th century due to the constitution of a company made up of ten people, led by Francisco Fernández Pelón, who looted the Cerro de la Mezquita, putting an end to future investigations.

Later, a small farmhouse was built reusing the materials from the site that remained in use until the mid-70s of the 20th century.
