Built by Omar ibn Hafsún as the capital of the independent territory that this muladí managed to dominate a large part of Andalusia for 80 years against the Caliphate of Córdoba in an almost impregnable area. In it, the remains of several churches have been found, a good number of rock dwellings, a fortress built by ‘Abd al-Raḥmān III after his conquest and a set of external defensive constructions.

We propose this one-day excursion to discover everything that is being discovered in Bobastro and in one of those defensive squares in its surroundings, with a special interest in the semi-excavated church known as the Basilica of Bobastro.

Excursion for the most part on foot in a rugged area, recommended for people who are fit and wear appropriate footwear.

Pizarra

Occupying a craggy hill at the northernmost end of the Sierra de Gibralmora (Pizarra), a kind of “small Bobastro” in which you can see a layout of the structures that make it up and a topography very similar to the Mesas de Villaverde . It is quite possible that the settlement was continuously occupied from the 7th to the 9th century, during the revolt of ʻUmar ibn Ḥafṣūn. The name given to this enclave, the true door of Bobastro, was that of Santa María.
