Trip to the Valle del Silencio

In the surroundings of Ponferrada we will be able to know two very different Mozarabic churches of great interest: Santiago de Peñalba, a church of a Mozarabic monastery founded by St. Genadio in the magnificent surroundings of El Valledel Silencio, a remote place in the mounts of León, of which a an exceptional church has been preserved in excellent condition, and St. Tomás de las Ollas, a small church in a neighborhood of Ponferrada, of which only an eliptic apse from the original structure has been preserved with access through a bent horseshoe arch, something quite uncommon for that period. We propose a two day long trip that will let us visit also the castle of Ponferrada, recently restored, and the Templun Libri museum of illuminated codex facsimiles. Guía del viaje
Día 1
This small church is located at the entrance of Ponferrada. It has a single nave with a magnificent oval apse that consists of nine horseshoe arches attached to the wall, upon columns and capitals with access through a triumphal arch, also horseshoe, covered with a magnificent groin vault of eleven edges that lean upon the centre of each arch dividing it in other eleven segments of clear Cordovan descent.
